Ten Effective Ways to Implement Technology in the Classroom

Ten fun and effective ways to implement technology in the classroom

1.  Have your students use the internet for research and projects.  Make sure that they are using web sites that are respected and trusted authorities on the subjects that they are researching.  Teach them how to find out if a web site is legitimate.  Base research around academic type type websites or other large institutions that you are familiar with.

2.  Allow your children to use different websites to learn math, science or other interactive type activities.  There are many sites that cater to kids and have programs set up for grade level and subject.  This can be a fun alternative to flash cards or route memorization.  It can also be used as a reward.

3.  Watch documentaries, this can be on DVD, Youtube, or any other medium for that matter.  Teach kids how to find information on subjects that they are interested in.

4.  Play video games.  This may not sound like a traditional class room activity, but NASA and the military not to mention any flight school uses simulators all the time as educational tools.  Games can be educational, interactive, connected over the internet, or just for fun.  Games can be used as rewards or to snap a kid out of a mid afternoon lull.

5.  Allow your kids to interact on social networks.  Monitor their interactions and educate them on the perils that are present.  These networks can be great tools for friendship, job hunting, entrepreneurship, and many other things but prudence and maturity are an important factor in these areas.

6.  Have your student do a power point presentation as part of a report.  These can be agonizing boring to watch in meetings but they can also be powerful tools when people put them together thoughtfully.  There is a learning curve and it always helps to start early.

7.  Use a video camera to make presentations and document science experiments or other activities.  Kids love to make movies, this is a great tool to make learning not seem like learning, aka. unschooling.

8.  Do a section on web design or computer programing.  It isn’t that hard and there are lots of resources available on the web, including blogs and instructional videos.  Things have come a long way since the pascal computer programing classes I took as a kid.

9.  Teach your kids how to use the standard programs on a computer, like word programs or photo management software.  Have them do their work on the computer and start to move towards a paperless classroom.  It is the way of the future.

10.  Go outside and geocache.  This is fun and active and uses a hand held gps until.    If you are not familiar with this activity do some research and find out where some geocaches are near you.  Location based technology is one of the most useful tools build in the last decade and geocaching is one of the most fun ways to take advantage of it.

These are just some quick examples of how to use technology in the classroom and should make you consider more opportunities.  Embrace the future and integrate technology and software into the classroom and have fun while your at it.
